What’s New for 2022?
Lifted Tacoma models get jacked up even higher for the 2022 model year. The Trail Edition and TRD Pro both now sit a half-inch taller in the back and 1.1 and 1.5 inches taller, respectively, up front. The height advantage gives each truck better approach, breakover, and departure angles that make crawling over uneven terrain easier than before. The TRD Pro adds a wild-looking and exclusive Electric Lime paint color, too, and the Trail Edition can now be coated in Lunar Rock (previously limited to TRD Pro models). Highlighting the Trail Edition’s visual updates are bronze 16-inch rims as well as bronze lettering in its grille. The TRD Pro is now further distinguished by a debossed «TRD Pro» logo on its rear bedsides and there are also new hood graphics.
Unique Attributes
In addition to its rugged off-road models, Toyota developed a high performance version of the Tacoma, the X-Runner. The X-Runner name comes from its exclusive «X-braced» reinforced frame that provides enhanced rigidity. This sports-truck is powered by a 245-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine, which allows for acceleration form zero-to-60 in under seven seconds. The X-Runner has full ground effects surrounding the vehicle, a hood scoop, and integrated fog lamps. It is only offered in three colors: Radiant Red, Black Sand, and Speedway Blue. The X-Runner suspension was lowered one inch versus the standard Tacoma frame and comes with 255/45R18 Bridgestone Potenza performance tires on 18-inch alloy wheels.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Sticking to your roots is commendable, but it doesn’t work in the favor of the Tacoma’s cabin. The utilitarian layout and materials are of a different era. The higher trim levels rely heavily on hard plastics and minimalistic materials. However, the Tacoma finally offers a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Still, cramped quarters are a staple of the Tacoma. The crew cab’s rear seat is where passengers in the Tacoma will have to squeeze, as legroom is abysmal. The Tacoma has more than enough volume in its five-foot or six-foot bed, but it disappoints with few storage cubbies and limited carry-on space inside. Storage capacity is restricted inside the Tacoma, and the crew cab we tested was only able to hold nine carry-ons in the back seat. Aside from the center-console bin, there aren’t many usable storage bins or cubbies.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Tacoma deserves a new powertrain. While it’s currently the only mid-size truck that’s available with a manual transmission—we’d like it to stay that way—its six-speed automatic transmission is clumsy and obsolete compared with those in competitors such as the GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier. The outgoing Tacoma offers an anemic four-cylinder base engine and an optional V-6 that’s less powerful than every other V-6-powered rival, including the often-derided Honda Ridgeline. We expect Toyota to package the new Tacoma with a turbocharged four-cylinder–potentially the 2.4-liter from the Lexus NX350 that makes 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. That engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic. As with the new Tundra, the Tacoma might be offered with a hybrid version of its V-6 powertrain. The mid-size truck will still utilize a body-on-frame construction, but we expect it to lose its rear leaf-spring suspension for a more modern coil-spring setup that should improve both its ride and handling.

Overview
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is terrific for work duties and fantastic for off-roading, but its small interior and driving manners are less refined than most other mid-size pickups. While it’s the only one that still offers a manual transmission, its anemic four-cylinder and 270-hp V-6 deliver unremarkable performance; a six-speed automatic is optional but isn’t particularly refined. At least the Tacoma is backed by Toyota’s storied reliability, and its off-road-optimized models are especially capable. It flourishes in the mud and on the trails, with a flexible suspension and rugged equipment that help preserve its reputation alongside legends such as the Jeep Wrangler and now its pickup counterpart, the Gladiator. The 2022 Tacoma isn’t as customizable as the Jeeps, and it doesn’t drive as well as the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, but the Taco is tough and packed with standard driver-assistance tech.
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
The Tacoma’s warranty coverage aligns with most rivals, and Toyota offers the best complimentary scheduled maintenance plan in its class.

Locally-made batteries
TMC plans to invest JPY 380 billion (USD 3 billion) in automotive batteries in the U.S. by 2030. The company will use this investment to develop and manufacture batteries for partially electric and fully electric vehicles. As a result, the Tacoma EV could pack locally developed and built batteries.
Electrified vehicles accounted for 25% of the company’s sales volume (both Toyota and Lexus) in 2021, and this number is likely to grow significantly higher in the future. The Japanese automaker plans to introduce 30 Toyota and Lexus BEVs, including the already-revealed bZ4X and RZ, by 2030. Most of these models should come to the U.S., hence the early battery localization preparations.
Long-lasting batteries would be crucial to ensure durability and reliability, which are the key USPs of Toyotas. During a media and investor briefing in September 2021, TMC said that power output is its focus for HEV batteries and endurance for the PHEV and BEV batteries. Masahiko Maeda, the company’s Chief Technology Officer, said that in the case of the bZ4X, it had set a target of 90% endurance performance.

Criticisms
Older Tacomas (1995-2004) are prone to frame rust. There are many trucks whose body shows almost no rust but whose frame is rusted beyond repair. In addition to being potentially dangerous, this can cause the truck to fail a state safety inspection.
The rust is typically worst near the spot where the front of the rear leaf spring connects to the frame. If you are considering purchasing an older Tacoma, inspect this area!
On March 8 2008, Toyota announced an Extended Warranty program for Tacomas 1995-2000. This extended warranty specifically covers the frame rust problem, and extends coverage to 15 years. Upon inspection, Toyota is purchasing the vehicles back from the owners for 150% of the Kelly Blue Book retail value for an excellent condition Tacoma.
Toyota learned of this problem by concerned owners contacting them directly regarding this perforation rust on the frame. Unfortunately for some of these owners, who had to either sell or scrap their vehicles due to the damage, Toyota refuses to extend any type of compensation, although Toyota had been contacted regarding the rust damage to these individuals trucks, and developed this «Customer Care» program specifically due to their complaints.
Release Date & Price
Given that its donor model (next-gen gas-powered Tacoma) should go on sale and achieve normalized production next year, the Toyota Tacoma EV should enter showrooms by 2025.
At least 300 miles of range and a starting price of under USD 40,000 would be the general expectation from potential Tacoma EV customers mid-decade. Ford has introduced a higher-segment electric pickup, the Ford F-150 Lightning, at that base price, which is to be followed by General Motors with the Silverado EV WT next spring. The smaller Toyota electric truck would rival Ford’s Ranger EV, which could arrive closer to 2025, and therefore pricing has to be competitive.

Inspired by the totally redesigned Toyota Tundra, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma should have similar styling cues and equally modern mechanical components. Unlike the full-size Tundra, the mid-size Tacoma outsells its domestic alternatives, which include the Chevy Colorado and Ford Ranger. However, Toyota’s most popular truck will require significant improvements to remain dominant, and the next generation aims to accomplish that. The new Tacoma will feature a new body-on-frame platform that’ll likely include a more sophisticated coil-spring rear suspension. Likewise, we expect it to get a powertrain upgrade, which could mean a turbocharged four-cylinder with an available hybrid version like the Tundra. The 2024 Tacoma also should benefit from a snazzier interior and a more contemporary infotainment system, but official details remain to be seen.
