Rivals

The Ferrari Portofino runs with a tough pack of British-build GT candidates. Aston Martin’s DB11 Volante ($219,320) benefits from an AMG-sourced, 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8, delivering 503 hp and 498 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 60 mph takes 4.1 seconds and top speed is reached at 187 mph. Bentley’s answer to the call for a plush, high-output vehicle is its all-new Continental GT Convertible. Utilizing an all-wheel drive system and a massive 6.0-liter, twin-turbo W12, the Continental GT makes 626 hp, hits 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, and tops out at 207 mph. Aesthetics will likely settle the minds of buyers, but the Portofino holds a clear edge in terms of performance.

Stepping inside

Inside, of course, Ferrari is still doing stellar work, improving the ergonomics here and there but still letting you know this is a driver’s focused car. Under the dashboard hood, front and center, is a big, real tachometer, flanked by two digital screens for various kinds of data and information. Directly in front of that is your connection to the Ferrari, the race-car inspired, flat bottom steering wheel.

Ferrari fans will know basically everything can be controlled via the steering wheel. Engine stop-start, lights, wipers, even the turn-signal controls are a button push away on the wheel. And most importantly, the ‘manettino’ dial on the lower right of the steering wheel allows you to switch across comfort, sport, and ESC OFF (essentially ‘track’) modes on the fly. Many manufacturers have built similar selectors on their steering wheels, but I believe Ferrari’s manettino is still the best. You can almost envision Michael Schumacher dialing in the manettino on his race car, down the straight at Monza 20 years ago…

Back to the cabin. The center stock flows nicely with the wide touchscreen inlaid tastefully. The software is fine, with the various Ferrari quicks which they are known for, but you can bypass all that because Ferrari’s allow Apple CarPlay. A nice touch, but it will cost you. The seats feel great with lots of adjustment available, and I was not fatigued at all even after a few hours of driving.

One other thing you will notice in the beautiful cabin — rear seats. But they are not suitable for most humans; they are most likely for small cargo and/or small kids. I do have to note there are anchors for car seats, that when not in use are hidden by a nice leather cover. Hand-stitched I have to imagine…

Features and Highlights

Engine

The Portofino is the beneficiary of Ferrari’s renowned and award-winning V8 Turbo engine, which should provide as much delight for the Ferrari fanatic as it does for the more unassuming target market.

The 3.9L unit produces 591-horsepower at 7,500 rpm and 560 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 – 5,250 rpm and according to Ferrari, is capable of 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 320 km/h.

Hardly what would be considered “fast” for Ferrari’s current outfit, but more than adequately attributed for a supercar.

Chassis

Not unlike virtually every Ferrari off the assembly line these days, the engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, with paddle shifters fixed on the steering column. The chassis, steering, and suspension have been comprehensively improved over the California T to ensure that ride comfort was not sacrificed for improved handling.

The car is fitted with a third generation rear differential and integrated with F1-Trac which improves both mechanical grip and control at the limit. Electric Power Steering (EPS) improves steering responsiveness while a magnetorheological damping system (SCM-E) reduces body roll and simultaneously improves absorption over bumps and harsh road surfaces.

Exterior

The Ferrari Design Centre has penned the Portofino as an “aggressively styled car with a two-box fastback configuration”. Most notable is the retractable hardtop which allows the car to transform between coupe and convertible while maintaining an elegant and dynamic stature in either form.

Overall, the exterior design of this grand tourer – which is a harmonious symphony of beauty and beast – appears to make the car more likened to the Ferrari F12 than its predecessor, the California T.

Interior

To create the cabin that its target market demands, the Portofino is lavished with a slew of features which cater to creature comforts, convenience, and overall luxury.

A 10.2” touchscreen infotainment system, state-of-the-art climate control system, 18-way electrically adjustable seats and passenger display, are among the Portofino’s standard fare. The combination of leather, carbon fiber, and aluminum accents provides a posh, yet sporty feel to the interior.

When shopping for a 2+2, buyers should never be sold on having plenty (or even enough) legroom in the back seats – the Portofino is no exception. Small children are the only demographic who might be comfortable with longer excursions in the back of the car.

Verdict

We already know that if you want a faster and more performance oriented Ferrari, you wouldn’t be shopping for a Ferrari Portofino.

However, the Portofino for what it is – is unquestionably a great improvement over its predecessor. Afterall, it has more power and less weight, while being more enjoyable to drive and arguably, better looking than the California T that it is replacing.

Auto journalists such as Car Magazine and Car and Driver note that the Portofino is very engaging to drive spiritedly, sans the desire to go around breaking any lap records. Ultimately, the Ferrari Portofino is the amalgamation of what it was designed to be – a Ferrari which offers a unique blend of daily driving practicality, performance, and luxury.

The Ferrari Portofino will probably strike a chord with those who are cross-shopping in this segment. Interestingly, 70% of buyers of the California T were new customers to the marque. If the Portofino is able to achieve similar success, I would consider that a big win for Ferrari.

Tech features

The Portofino is among the more technologically sophisticated performance vehicles I’ve encountered. It certainly isn’t lacking in digital real estate – I count four screens scattered along the dashboard. Drivers can adjust a pair of monitors on either side of the tachometer to summon navigation, media, telemetry, and speed readout information. Because both displays are so recessed, neither is impacted by glare while the top is down. A 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment sits between the front passengers and offers crisp visuals, an intuitive menu, and quick response to inputs. An optional 8.8-inch screen is delicately integrated within the passenger side dash and shows a truncated assortment of performance and entertainment data.

Convenience goodies are on par for the grand touring set, including heated, 18-way adjustable seats, Apple CarPlay, a premium JBL audio system, plus front and rear cameras. As is the case for most supercars, driver assistance features are not available. Even if conceived for long-haul comfort, the Portofino is to be driven intentionally, not absentmindedly.

Synopsis

The Ferrari Portofino was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show as the successor to the 2014 Ferrari California T. It began production in 2018, and is named after an Italian fishing village popular by tourists and celebrities.

Platform

Similar to the California T, the Portofino is based on a front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive platform with a rear-biased weight distribution. Despite slightly larger dimensions and torsional rigidity increased by 35%, weight has been reduced by 149 lb (68 kg) to 3669 lb (1664 kg).

Drivetrain

The twin-turbocharged V8 engine and seven-speed dual clutch gearbox were largely carried over from its predecessor. Codenamed F154, the engine produces 591 hp (441 kW) at 7500 rpm, yielding an increase of 37 hp (28 kW) and greater power-to-weight ratio than before.

The drive

The Portofino is all sport here — everything is composed, starting with your seating position, which is just right. Hit the engine start-stop button on the steering wheel and you’ll hear something that will make you believe in the divine (or at least the Church of Ferrari). The sound that comes out of that engine and through the exhaust will wake your soul.

Driving the Ferrari Portofino

Once on the road the steering was tight, no slop here, and the accelerator pedal responded immediately to input. Shifts are quick and sometimes unnoticeable in the ‘comfort’ setting. In sport and track modes, the shifts are more aggressive and give you a little nudge.

Ferrari Portofino (Credit: Ferrari)

And that sound … it’s glorious. Somehow Ferrari is able to fine-tune its turbo-charged engines to sound like its naturally aspirated engines of the past. That, coupled with how tight and responsive the steering and handling is, will make you lose any initial thought that this car is something like a glorified Maserati GranTurismo.

No, this car is a sports car through and through. The Portofino can hang with some stiff competition (the McLaren 570S for example); it is no slouch. And that sound coming out of the back through those quad tip exhausts, especially with the top down is sonorous, profound… un suono bellissimo. it will keep you up at night.

And that’s another wonderful thing about this convertible Portofino (and even California T for that matter), the versatility it gives owners with the ability to have a hard top on those cooler days, and an amazing top-down, summer experience when it’s warmer. It was in the high 50s on one of the days I had the car, and with the top down and windows up, I was fine. In fact you could even have a conversation with your passenger, assuming you were observing the speed limit.

Ferrari Portofino (Credit: Ferrari)

Also another big check in the versatility department (didn’t think I’d be talking so much about how practical this car is), is its MagneRide adaptive suspension system. Road starts getting too bumpy? Hit the shock absorber button on the steering wheel and the suspension loosens up, the road bumps smooth out, and you no longer have the sensation of a jackhammer drilling into your lower back.

And let’s not forget the two small “seats” in the back — very handy for storage or putting someone back there for a very short ride to your local bistro.

Enough about the practicality and versatility. The conclusion is this: The Portofino is a car truly worthy of the prancing horse badge. Enzo Ferrari would be proud of his team back in Maranello — for they have made an exciting, dynamic, and downright fun car that sits squarely at the top of the “entry level” (for the wealthy that is) supercar range.

  • 245 — ширина профиля (поперечного разреза покрышки) в миллиметрах;
  • 35 — высота профиля в процентах от его ширины;

More Than Just An “Entry-Level” Ferrari?

The new Ferrari Portofino is the de facto successor of the best-selling Ferrari in history – the Ferrari California T. Following in the steps of its predecessor, the Portofino is a grand touring, 2+2, hardtop convertible with its engine located in the front.

It is fairly obvious that Ferrari designed the Portofino to have more mass-market-appeal than the rest of its predominantly mid-engined, race-car-inspired-line-up. Ferrari wanted the car to be more relatable – attracting first-time buyers to the Ferrari brand with its relatively low price point (starting at $ USD $215,000), everyday driveability, comfort, and versatility.

In fact, Ferrari has invested a conspicuous amount of time and money into market research in order to determine in great detail how the evolution of their V8 twin-turbo GT would play out. So, we know that based on its price the Portofino is an entry-level Ferrari. Purists would scoff at the notion of such a thing existing – so perhaps the real question should be “is it more entry-level or is it more Ferrari”?

Ferrari California T .

Interior and exterior design

Aesthetically, the outgoing Ferrari California T was not an easy car to love. Its long nose and short overhangs were classic front-mid-engine sports car, but a steeply raked roofline and prominent rear diminished curb appeal. With the introduction of the Portofino, Ferrari addressed the California T’s stylistic shortcomings to deliver a spectacular GT physique.

With the three-piece folding hardtop flowing gently into the wider, narrower rear end, the Portofino adopts a striking fastback silhouette. At the front, the Portofino’s expressive face includes sculpted air inlets, a grinning grille, and flowing headlights. The hood incorporates a pair of grooves and heat extractors. In profile, the Portofino’s five-spoke matte gray wheels leave plenty of room for the optional yellow painted calipers to shine.

Raised, extended haunches give the car a powerful stance. Oversized quad exhaust ports and a dramatic diffuser visually lower the Portofino’s behind. My tester’s grigio titanio paint is on the subtler end of the supercar spectrum, but it traces the vehicle’s character lines beautifully. Certainly, the Portofino’s design is the most assertive of its convertible GT rivals, which include the Aston Martin DB11 Volante and the Bentley Continental GT Convertible.

The Portofino is among the more technologically sophisticated performance vehicles I’ve encountered.

In 14 seconds, the Portofino’s roof tucks neatly under the trunk panel, revealing one of the most exquisite cabins of any roadster on sale. Cuoio-colored leather adorns the 2+2 seating configuration, console, door inserts, and lower half of the dashboard. Elsewhere, black hide trims the upper dash, steering wheel inserts, and deck lid. Brushed metal accents are used for the round air vents, Portofino and Ferrari badges, and console controls.

No one fashions a steering wheel like Ferrari; the shape and intricacy makes any driver feel like part racer, part monarch. The kid in me wants to press every button and flick every toggle (which I do), but the truth of each control is that it has a specific function, ultimately allowing the driver to keep both hands on the wheel at all times. Equally arresting is the gauge cluster, complete with a centered, supersized tachometer (available in a number of hues) and two digital monitors. To the driver’s right is a stepped arrangement for the reverse gear, manual/auto shift selection, and launch control system.

An ideal blend of analog and digital, the Portofino’s interior is an elegant, comfortable, and intriguing home for road trip enthusiasts. There is one catch, however: cargo volume. With the roof stowed, the Portofino fits little more than two carry-on bags in its trunk (a similar capacity to its main rivals). Those needing more versatility must store parcels on the foldable rear seats (which lack sufficient legroom to host adults).

2018 Ferrari Portofino

Named after one of Italy’s most beautiful towns, the Portofino is far from what Ferrari’s most hardcore fans – who are predictably the biggest critics of the Portofino – expect from the very manufacturer that has produced automotive icons such as the F40, Enzo, 458 Italia, and LaFerrari, to name a few.

However, Ferrari fashioned the Portofino to dominate in its particular segment – one which consists of the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Mercedes AMG SL65 and Aston Martin DB11. In order to do so, Ferrari says, the Portofino must be “a GT that represents a unique combination of sportiness, elegance and onboard comfort”.

With that in mind, Ferrari has ensured that their design incorporated a powerful turbo V8 engine, a chassis benefiting from a multitude of vehicle dynamics which promote responsiveness and superior ride comfort, and an aggressively-styled and sleek fastback silhouette.
