Charging a VW e-Golf at home
Charging at home is often the most convenient and cost effective way to recharge an EV. Government grants are available for the installation of home EV charge points, and a large number of companies offer a fully installed charge point for a fixed price.
Most home chargers are either rated at 3 kW or 7 kW. The higher powered wall-mounted units normally cost more than the slower 3 kW option, but halve the time required to fully charge an EV. Many plug-in car manufacturers have deals or partnerships with charge point suppliers, and in some cases provide a free home charge point as part of a new car purchase.
How to charge a VW e-Golf
The VW e-Golf range uses the CCS charging standard, which consists of a combined AC and DC inlet port. The top portion of the inlet is for the Type 2 connector, which is used when charging at home or at public slow and fast AC points. The both the upper and lower sections on the inlet are used to carry high power during rapid DC charging. The VW e-Golf’s CCS charging inlet is found on the off-side rear 3/4 panel where you would expect to find a petrol flap.
The VW e-Golf is able to be slow, fast and rapid charged from public points, depending on the network and type of charge unit. In most cases, slow charging requires a 3-pin-to-Type 2 cable, and fast charging a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable, one of which is usually supplied with the vehicle. For rapid charging, the vehicle uses a tethered CCS connector which is part of the charging unit.
Type 2 – Slow & Fast | CCS – Rapid |
---|---|
Charging on AC or DC requires the EV driver to plug the connectors into the correct inlet, after which the car then ‘talks’ to the charging unit to make sure there is a power supply, that there are no faults, and that it is safe to start charging. If charging at private home or workplace charge point, the vehicle then automatically starts charging.
On a public charger, an activation process is required to initiate charging. Depending on the network provider, this may require the use of an RFID card or smartphone app, often linked to an account which has been set up beforehand. Contactless pay-as-you-go units are also becoming more common on newer units. Once activated, the units will conduct further connection and account checks before starting to charge the vehicle.
e-Golf specs and equipment
It’s a common belief that, compared to its competitor cars, the Golf is not that well equipped. Volkswagen has been busy addressing that in the latest model line-up. But you’ll still have to pay extra for the really fancy premium-car stuff and the best tech, unless you pick a high-level Golf GTi, GTD or R… or, as it turns out, the e-Golf.
Priced at £32,075 before you apply the UK Government’s £4.5k plug-in cars grant discount, the e-Golf is on the pricey side for a family hatchback car. In the electric car game, it’s more expensive than the smaller Kia Soul EV, Renault Zoe or similar-sized Nissan Leaf. But notably, it still undercuts the BMW i3, Teslas and Jag i-Pace.
However, to cushion the blow of the spend you’re being asked to make to get the latest electric battery technology, VW has thrown all the kit at the e-Golf as standard. So unlike regular Golf models, it comes with the larger 9.2-inch version of VW’s two touchscreen systems with gesture control and 3D Navigation maps, a 12-inch digital cockpit display, wireless connectivity, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and an app which allows you to remotely heat, cool and unlock the car from your phone.
Powertrain, Charging, and Performance
Likes: Zippy-feeling acceleration in urban settings, standard DC fast charging, athletic chassis. Dislikes: Not enough driving range, other rivals are faster and just as fun to drive.
The e-Golf can charge at either a 120-volt or a 240-volt outlet. A full charge requires roughly 26 hours on standard 120-volt house current but less than six hours on 240 volts. DC fast charging is a standard feature in both the SE and SEL Premium trims. That system allows the e-Golf to reach an 80-percent charge in just one hour at a DC fast-charging station. The roughly six-hour charge time is workable, but we’d happily trade longer charge times for more range. The e-Golf feels zippy but in our testing it delivered a zero-to-60-mph time of 8.5 seconds, which is slower than the Bolt EV by two whole seconds.
The Golf family has long included some of the most competent, fun-to-drive entrants in the compact class, and the e-Golf doesn’t stray an inch from that path. It is nimble and responsive, with light, accurate steering and predictable responses to driver inputs.
Volkswagen Golf 8
Full of tech goodies
In addition to the above, you get goodies like heated seats, fully LED headlamps and tail lamps (which are brighter than normal lights but also use less power) – and features which aren’t standard on a regular Golf. And of course, the e-Golf is technically an automatic – a gearbox choice you’ll have to pay extra for on other Golf models.
You also get adaptive cruise control, an electric-heated front windscreen, a three-year subscription to connected services (live fuel prices, weather, traffic and also on-board emergency-call and response functionality), and the usual Bluetooth, USB ports, DAB radio. Oh, and the warranty on the battery is eight years.
What the e-Golf perhaps lacks is the very latest in assistive technology systems. Our car came with a £1225 pack which includes lane-keep assistance, rear traffic alert and traffic jam assist (which allows the car to drive semi-autonomously) – but it’s not as advanced as the systems you’ll find in a Tesla, BMW, Volvo, or the Nissan Leaf. Nor is there a head-up display (HUD), and you don’t get leather seats either (they’re not very eco, you see).
What sort of battery does an e-Golf have?
The e-Golf uses lithium ion batteries — a power dense, high voltage technology that works well for storing a lot of energy. Although the lithium ion batteries in an EV are much stronger and more durable than those in your phone or laptop, they will still start to lose power and capacity with age and use. Battery degradation happens because of two things:
a) the age of the battery (also known as ‘calendar’ aging)
b) how the battery is used, charged, and stored
Calendar aging is inevitable — it starts the moment a battery is made. However, there are things that can cause a battery to degrade faster. The way an EV is charged and stored will impact the rate of battery degradation, so there are ways for an EV owners to slow the process. This discussion is covered in a research article on battery degradation.
What is the battery size of a e-Golf?
The battery size, or battery capacity, is measured in kWh. The e-Golf was originally released with a 24.2 kWh battery, which was upgraded to 35.8 kWh in 2017 models. These are pretty small batteries, but the e-Golf’s efficiency means that the small capacities can carry the car for a decent range.
e-Golf charging and range
With its new 36 kWh battery, this latest e-Golf has a greater range than the original 2014 e-Golf, and its battery is more capacious than the current BMW i3 (which is 33kWh). However, it’s less capacious than the new Nissan Leaf (40kWh).
Officially, the current European (NEDC) test puts the e-Golf’s range at 186 miles from a full charge. VW says 124 miles. Our test car arrived with a full battery displaying 136 miles of range, and the most we went on one charge was 101 miles. Bear in mind, however, that it was quite cold when we had the car and we ran the heater and heated seats liberally, which affects the battery range.
If you’re careful with your driving style – and the e-Golf offers Eco and Eco+ drive modes to help you out – we think that 125 miles on a charge feels quite an achievable real-world range. In the high summer, when higher temperatures help the battery longevity, you might even manage 150 miles.
Our biggest gripe is a usability one: the e-Golf’s digital dashboard display, while bright and flashy, feels like it’s been designed for petrol and diesel cars, and the battery charge state and range are often hard to see at a quick glance, because they’re amongst so much information. You can customise this display, but it remains busy, and we prefer the simpler displays of BMW, Kia and Nissan – all of which prioritise showing you how much charge/range there is left in the battery as their number one feature.
Charging-wise, the Golf can be charged from your home 3-pin plug – where it’ll take 17 hours to fully charge. Or you can charge it from a dedicated 3.6 or 7.2kW wall box (you can get a government grant to install one of these if you buy a car like the e-Golf, and they then cost you about £300). We’ve got a 7.2kW unit at home and found it took the Golf in the region of five-to-six hours to fully charge. The e-Golf is also compatible with fast and rapid-charge public chargers. On the motorway spec rapid-charge CCS chargers, VW says it will take just 45 minutes to go from 0 to 80 per cent charged.
To recap
If you want to go electric in the easiest way possible, and if you don’t want to make a big statement, then the eGolf is the car for you. It looks just like a regular Golf, with all the space, looks and interior appointments, too. The 36kWh battery gives a useful range and there’s more equipment than in a normal Golf. It’s hard to find fault unless you’re after big thrills or Tesla-style tech.

Easy-peasy driving squeasy
It’s when you set off down the road that the differences between this and a regular Golf become apparent. As it’s electric, the e-Golf starts and sets off in silence. This might sound obvious, but if you’re not used to an electric car, it feels very strange at first. But you’ll quickly get used to it, and even start to enjoy it.
The e-Golf really is extremely quiet on the move too. The regular Golf is well insulated and refined, so when you take things like the petrol or diesel engine and changing gears out of the equation, it gets better still. You don’t really have to do much as the driver – no gears to change, no clutch to engage – which makes it a very easy car to drive indeed.
But just because it’s easy doesn’t mean it’s not fun. The e-Golf brings power and performance at low speeds thanks to its electric motor. It’s so punchy that it’s easy to spin the front wheels when the road is wet or cold. But it’s also easy to pull away from the lights in a hurry, beating other – apparently more powerful – cars. At lower speeds the Golf feels a lot quicker than its official 0-62mph time of 9.6 seconds suggests. It’s just like the Nissan Leaf in this regard.
How long does it take to charge a VW e-Golf?
The following table shows approximate time to charge a VW e-Golf. Times are for a 100% charge for all but rapid charging, which is quoted for 0-80% as most rapid chargers reduce or cut power well before 100% charge to protect the battery and maximise efficiency.
Note that the times shown are only a guide, as very rarely will an EV need to be fully charged from 0%. Other factors that might vary the charging time include ambient temperature, in-vehicle energy loads, any upper and lower charge restrictions to extend battery life and protect against potential damage, and charging rates slowing down as the maximum charge is reached.
Rapid 50kW | Fast 22kW | Fast 7kW | Slow 3kW |
---|---|---|---|
35 mins 0-80% | 5 hours 0-100% | 5 hours 0-100% | 12 hours 0-100% |
The VW e-Golf is fitted with a 7.2 kW on-board charger for AC charging in addition to the Rapid 50 kW DC option. This means that even when connected to a fast charger with a rated output above 7.2 kW, the VW e-Golf will only be able to charge at 7.2 kW.
Use Zap-Map’s Home Charging Calculator to estimate charging times for a VW e-Golf. The level of battery charge, connector speed, and on-board charger options can be tailored to your requirements for more accurate results.

Just… normal
Everything about the e-Golf feels like it’s been designed to make it as easy as possible for people to choose an electric vehicle (EV). It opens with a regular key – just like a Golf. There’s the same five seats, nice dashboard and decent sized boot – just like a Golf. There’s an interface that initially looks just the same as in any regular, high-spec Golf, too. There’s even a traditional automatic gear-shifter: push forward for park and move back to put into drive. It’s all perfectly normal and dead easy to use.
So where is the e-Golf different? Design-wise, there are e-Golf specific wheels, lighting at the front, blue detailing inside, and a more limited colour palette (but don’t worry – you don’t have to have one painted white). Our test e-Golf is keyless (a £375 option), so you just jump in, put your foot on the brake like a regular automatic, then hit the Start button. All of this is a good thing, because – as you might be grasping – it’s like a regular Golf, which means if you’re nervous about getting an electric car, this might be the one for you.
How much does it cost to charge a VW e-Golf?
The table shown below shows estimates of the cost to charge the VW e-Golf’s 35.8 kWh battery at home (on a domestic tariff) or using a rapid charge point. Cost estimates are dependent on the charge remaining, usable battery capacity, and age of battery pack. Cost per mile is calculated using an estimate of real-world range.
Type | Cost/kWh | Cost to charge | Cost per mile |
---|
Based on these figures, the VW e-Golf’s fuel costs are 3-7 p/mile based on real-world energy usage, the cost depending on the type of charging. In general, home charging provides the cheapest per mile cost and public rapid charging tends to be around double the cost. These fuel costs compare favourably with 12-15 p/mile for conventional petrol and diesel cars.
To find the cost and times to charge an EV on a public charge point, Zap-Map’s Public Charging Calculator calculates charging costs for any new or used plug-in vehicle. The results can be personalised for different electricity costs and the level of charge required.
Charging a VW e-Golf on public networks
The UK has a large number of public EV charging networks, with some offering national coverage and others only found in a specific region. The major UK-wide networks include BP Chargemaster (Polar), Ecotricity, Pod Point, and Charge Your Car.
Payment and access methods across networks vary, with some networks providing an RFID card and others a smartphone app to use their services. While most require an account to be set up before use, some rapid units with contactless PAYG card readers are starting to be installed.
Although many EV charge points are free to use, the majority of fast and rapid chargers require payment. Charging tariffs tend to comprise a flat connection fee, a cost per charging time (pence per hour) and/or a cost per energy consumed (pence per kWh). For more information about network tariffs, visit Zap-Map’s public charge point networks guides.
How much does it cost to buy an e-Golf?
The e-Golf, descendant of the VW Golf line, was designed to be an affordable and practical car with a fun design and drive. The original purchase price in 2015 started at $33,450 and was lowered to around $30,000 in later years. Options and upgraded trim add to this MSRP. New e-Golfs were also eligible for the $7,500 federal tax incentive when still available.
The used cost of an e-Golf doesn’t vary as much as for some other brands since there are relatively fewer add-ons or upgrades and the range doesn’t change that much over its production years. Most used vehicles are between $14K — $24K with occasional cars as low as $11.5K and as high as $30K. Newer cars will command a higher price while older ones are reliably priced under $15K.
What is the cost per range mile in an e-Golf?
Cost per range mile is one way to look at the value of an EV across different makes and models. It helps a shopper understand how much of the purchase price is really going towards range, as opposed to amenities, comfort, or brand name. The e-Golf has a cost per range mile of $130 to $215.
How much does it cost to run an e-Golf for the year?
Recurrent uses data from the AFDC to determine the range of annual charging costs for the e-Golf. The highest electricity price we use is in Hawaii and the lowest in Louisiana. We assume an average driving pattern of 34 miles a day, 5 days a week, 49 weeks a year with 25% highway driving, plus a few additional highway road trips. For a 2017 e-Golf, this puts the annual charging costs between $320 — $1023. More detailed and personalized values can be calculated at the link above.
Volksvagen
