The default location of an ID3v2 tag is prepended to the audio so that
players can benefit from the information when the data is streamed. It is
however possible to append the tag, or make a prepend/append combination.
When deciding upon where an unembedded tag should be located, the following
order of preference SHOULD be considered.
- Prepend the tag.
- Prepend a tag with all vital information and add a second tag at
the end of the file, before tags from other tagging systems. The first
tag is required to have a SEEK frame. - Add a tag at the end of the file, before tags from other tagging
systems.
In case 2 and 3 the tag can simply be appended if no other known tags are
present. The suggested method to find ID3v2 tags are:
- Look for a prepended tag using the pattern found in section 3.1.
- If a SEEK frame was found, use its values to guide further
searching. - Look for a tag footer, scanning from the back of the file.

From the driverβs seat, the ID.3 feels like a car that took all-you-can-eat turns at the technology counter, and saved a small sliver of heritage for dessert. Itβs a fascinating paradox. Instead of looking at round gauges, the driver faces a 5.3-inch screen that displays everything you need to know while driving (like the speed, the available driving range, and navigation directions) and nothing superfluous. Although the electric motor can spin at up to 16,000 rpm, you wonβt find a tachometer in your line of sight. I like this straightforward approach, but itβs not new. In a way, it reminds me of my 1972 Beetle, which has an equally simple instrument cluster that consists of a single gauge. It groups an analog speedometer, an odometer, a fuel gauge (thatβs broken after nearly 50 years), and β¦ thatβs it.

Thereβs a free-standing, 10-inch touchscreen on the dashboard. It displays a new infotainment system designed to look and feel like a tablet. Itβs easy to use, its graphics are sharp, it responds quickly to input, and its menus are logically laid out. Touch-sensitive sliders located right below the screen replace the climate control systemβs bulky knobs, dials, and buttons. Thereβs another touch-sensitive slider used to adjust the stereoβs volume, plus additional touch-sensitive buttons on the steering wheel that control the various driving aids (like the adaptive cruise control). Do you notice a pattern? Nearly everything inside the ID.3 is touch-enabled, except for key systems such as the turn signals and the windshield wipers that really shouldnβt be replaced by buttons on a screen for safetyβs sake.

Volkswagen retained conventional power window switches, but there are only two embedded into the driver-side door panel instead of four. Opening or closing the rear windows from the driverβs seat requires pressing a backlit button thatβs β you guessed it β touch-sensitive to engage them, and using the same two switches that command the front windows. Tapping it again disengages the rear windows and sends power back to the front ones.

From the driverβs seat, before you even get moving, the ID.3 feels like a giant iPhone. I know this is an overused clichΓ©, but Iβve never experienced a vehicle that embodies it so accurately. Itβs been several years since weβve heard anything about Appleβs on-again, off-again car project, so the ID.3βs blend of simple, uncluttered design and user-friendly technology makes it the closest thing to the long-rumored iCar thatβs ever entered mass production.

Price
Volkswagen hasnβt disclosed exact prices for ID.3 yet, but they did make a press release which stated that the starting price of Pure will be less than 30,000 euros, and less than 40,000 euros for the mid range Pro version β which translates to about $32,500 and $43,500 respectively at current exchange rate. Exact prices are expected to be revealed by summer 2020.
But, it seems Volkswagen hasnβt been entirely forthcoming about the price range. The highly publicized prices turns out to be after government incentives. The Republic of Irelandβs leading newspaper, The Irish Times published an article, that covered a local launch event for ID.3 mid range Pro model. The newspaper mentions, βIts mass appeal will be limited by its price tag: starting at just under β¬40,000 for the introductory 1st edition model, a price thatβs inclusive of the β¬10,000 in Government grants.β The promotional specifications displayed by Volkswagen at the event included a small disclaimer at the bottom, βPrices are Net of Private customer grants and subject to final confirmation.β
Therefore, the real starting price, excluding of all incentives, is around 40,000 euros for base Pure model, and 50,000 euros for mid range Pro model β which translates to about $43,500 and $54,000 (US dollars) respectively, at current exchange rate. There are no price estimates for the top of the line VW Pro S model at this time, but it should be within $60,000 to $65,000 price range. Model 3 price can vary between countries in Europe, so as an example, Ireland price inclusive of government subsidies is compared in the chart.

Starting from scratch
Volkswagen developed the ID.3 on a blank slate. Itβs not an electric version of an existing car, like the e-Golf was, and it shares almost no parts with other recent additions to the companyβs range, such as the eighth-generation Golf. Itβs its own thing; it marks the beginning of a new adventure for Volkswagen. Itβs built on a purpose-designed architecture named MEB thatβs rear-wheel drive in its standard configuration β though making it all-wheel drive is as simple as adding a second electric motor over the front axle. Volkswagen told me MEB is flexible enough to underpin anything from a city-friendly hatchback to a family-sized SUV. Sedans, wagons, and vans are planned, too.
Although the ID.3 is recognizable as a member of the Volkswagen family, it shares very few styling cues with its siblings, and its proportions are anything but anodyne. Itβs 100 percent electric, it wasnβt designed with any kind of internal combustion engine in mind (not even a range extender), so stylists were able to stretch its wheelbase to almost Passat-like proportions while reducing its overhangs. Its motor is compact enough to fit in a sport bag.
Stylists devoted a considerable amount of energy to reducing the ID.3βs visual mass with styling cues.
The ID.3 measures 167.8 inches from end to end, 71.2 inches wide, and 61.1 inches tall, meaning itβs an inch shorter, about an inch narrower, and four inches taller than the latest Golf. Itβs a little bit higher than youβd expect because the lithium-ion battery pack that zaps the motor into motion is stuffed directly under the passenger compartment. Silke Bagschik, Volkswagenβs head of electric car marketing and sales, explained stylists devoted a considerable amount of energy to reducing the ID.3βs visual mass with styling cues like plastic cladding on the bottom of the doors, and a curved piece of trim that stretches from the base of the windshield to the tip of the rear hatch.

While the ID.3 is slightly taller than the average hatchback, itβs also a lot more spacious inside. The floor is slightly higher than youβd expect, again due to the battery under it, but itβs completely flat and thereβs a surprising amount of legroom regardless of whether youβre sitting in the front or in the back. It offers 13.5 cubic feet of trunk space, room for four or five adults depending on how itβs configured, plus numerous storage bins scattered throughout the cabin. And, yes, the pedals are marked with play and pause, just like on the ID concept introduced at the 2016 edition of the Paris auto show, and on the head-turning ID.Buggy concept I drove in sunny California in 2019. The aforementioned production version of the retro-fabulous ID.Buzz concept tentatively due out in 2022 will get them, too.
