The Subaru Impreza was redesigned for the 2017 model year and the Subaru Crosstrek was redesigned for the 2018 model year. Passenger-side small overlap frontal ratings are assigned by the Institute based on a test conducted by Subaru as part of . Ratings apply to both the 4-door sedan and wagon versions of the Impreza as well as 2018 and later models of the Crosstrek wagon.

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid electric variant of the Crosstrek wagon, was introduced in the 2019 model year. Ratings also apply to the Crosstrek Hybrid.

The Highs and Lows

Even though the adaptive cruise control annoyed me during both of the times it shut off in traffic, it’s also something a buyer would get used to immediately and probably not think about ever again. Sitting behind the wheel of a 2021 Crosstrek is a great place to be. I mentioned the seats are great, and overall the cabin is spacious; it might get a bit cramped with four large adults and all their luggage, but for two or three people, it’s perfectly doable. You don’t need the giant SUV if you’re honest about how many people and how much stuff you regularly haul around. And again, these things are just so easy to drive. 

Apart from excessive cabin noise on the highway (and the material cheapness it represents), I thought the biggest practical strike against the Crosstrek is that the trunk could be bigger. I brought my big suitcase to LA, you see, and it took up a large part of the cargo area. Now this feels vain, but really, the main thing I’m stuck on is the design! The front is fine, it looks like a Subaru, but the back is too chunky. It’s squat and square and wears the expression of an Easter Island Head. Then again, looks are highly subjective and you don’t see the outside of the car when you’re driving it anyway. You do see its objectively plain dashboard design, but that’s another thing that boils down to personal preference. You’ll either think it’s boring, or a welcome respite from increasingly overwrought interiors in other cars.

Sustainability

Subaru isn’t exactly leading the charge in bringing EVs to the masses—it only recently unveiled its first EV, the Solterra—but the Crosstrek’s mileage figures aren’t terrible. In fact, they’re on par with the competition, save for one mpg here and there (it does have an all-wheel-drive system, after all). When equipped with the CVT, the 2.0-liter returns 28 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined. Those numbers fall to 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined when you get it with the manual. The CVT-equipped 2.5-liter returns 27 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined.

The Crosstrek does come in a plug-in hybrid flavor, but that starts around $37,000 and only offers 17 miles of electric-only range from an 8.8 kWh battery pack and an overall 5 mpg combined boost over the pure ICE model. At that price, you have to really want a plug-in Subaru over a number of other hybrids in its class that offer more electric range or greater overall fuel economy, not to mention the increasing number of all-electric options. It’s also fair to point out that the PHEV Crosstrek clocks in at 3,717 pounds, about nearly 500 pounds heavier than this one, so if you’re regularly draining the battery and solely using its ICE powertrain, it’s going to be a lot less efficient.

Раньше имя Crosstrek носили только версии кроссовера для рынка Северной Америки, а на остальных рынках модель продавалась как Subaru XV. Но теперь американское название станет глобальным: представлен Subaru Crosstrek третьего поколения.

Внешность нового автомобиля приближена к другим моделям Subaru. Например, пластиковые «клыки» на переднем бампере и форма задних фонарей явно отсылают к облику рестайлинговых Ascent или Outback.

В основе самого доступного кроссовера от Subaru, как и раньше, лежит та же платформа SGP, даже длина колесной базы не изменилась (2670 мм). При этом габаритная длина кузова выросла с 4465 до 4680 мм, а высота – с 1550 до 1580 мм. Ширина (1800 мм) и дорожный просвет (200 мм) остались остались прежними.

Но какие-то поправки японцы все же внесли: несущая конструкция кузова (в том числе крепления подвески), по аналогии с моделями Levorg и WRX, была усилена, а для снижения вибраций в салоне места соединения крыши и стоек кузова покрыли слоем мастики.

Профиль сидений тоже изменился: субаровцы заявляют, что кресла дорабатывались при участии местных медицинских институтов с целью уменьшить вибрации, которые через кузов машины передаются в головы ездоков. Сами «салазки» кресел теперь крепятся напрямую к полу: по словам японцев, более жесткая конструкция также позволяет избавиться от лишней тряски.

Вместо восьмидюймового экрана на передней панели разместился тачкскрин диагональю 11,6 дюйма, как у «старших» моделей. Но классические шкалы на приборной панели сохранены.В конструкции рулевой рейки использован электроусилитель с изменяемым передаточным отношением, который наливает «баранку» усилием с ростом скорости.

Пока что представлена только версия для Японии. Там Crosstrek сохранит гибридную силовую установку на базе 2,0-литрового оппозитного «атмосферника» и клиноцепного вариатора Lineartronic с интегрированным электродвигателем. Система полного привода с муфтой подключения задних колес на внутреннем рынке будет доступна по умолчанию.

Светодиодные фары у кроссовера были и раньше, но теперь диодными сделаны еще и индикаторы поворота. А еще это первый Subaru для Японии с системой EyeSight нового поколения, с центральной широкоугольной камерой, хотя в других странах (и даже в России) такие машины уже продаются. Система работает в сочетании с электроусилителем тормозов.

Продажи нового Subaru Crosstrek в Японии начнутся только в 2023 году. В отличие от ряда других моделей, компактный кроссовер не локализован на заводе в Индиане, поэтому в США и других странах модель появится позже. На родине за Subaru XV второго поколения просят 2 959 000 иен (1,22 млн рублей) без учета опций, а в Америке базовый Crosstrek доступен за 23,6 тыс. долларов (1,41 млн рублей).

The Basics

The Crosstrek is Subaru’s smallest SUV offering, sitting below the Forester, Outback, and Ascent. Classed as a subcompact SUV and introduced in 2012, the current Crosstrek represents the model’s second-generation that launched in 2018. It comes in four different trims (Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited), can be had as a manual in Base or Premium trims, and also comes as a hybrid, too.

Exterior design-wise, I can’t say I love the Crosstrek’s overall looks. There isn’t much cohesion to its aesthetics; it looks more like it’s been made up of a lot of different shapes that don’t have much to do with one another. There is a lot of black plastic cladding, too, but this is frankly not something I mind terribly much, and I do like how high it rides. New for the 2021 model year is a redesigned front facia and grille, a new wheel design for all the trims, and new paint colors: Plasma Yellow Pearl and Horizon Blue Pearl.

Things are much better inside. For one, there’s a physical handbrake even though the test car was fitted with the CVT, and the steering wheel, gear selector lever, and pedals are all easily within reach via the manually adjusted seat. The optional, eight-inch touchscreen is underlined by physical dials and buttons for the radio and the car’s climate dials and buttons are located under those. The driver information gauges are analog and easy to read. It feels like sitting in a car from 2018 but in a good way—a time before so many automakers collectively lost their minds and relegated everything to one giant touchscreen. 

Base and Premium Crosstreks make use of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces a claimed 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. Sport and Limited models are equipped with the more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces a claimed 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. This new engine, which already existed in the Forester, was introduced during the Crosstrek’s 2021 model year.

В штатных режимах тяга делится между передними и задними колесами в равных долях, но в зависимости от дорожной обстановки данная пропорция может варьироваться – обеспечивая максимальную устойчивость.

Расход топлива

В комбинированном цикле пятидверке хватает в среднем 6.7 литра топлива на каждую «сотню» пробега, то есть на 48-литровом топливном баке можно вполне себе «протянуть» 600-700 км (в зависимости от стиля вождения, рельефа местности и других сопутствующих факторов). При этом в городском режиме уходит 8.7 литра, а на трассе – 6 литров.

Интерьер Subaru Crosstrek

Кроссовер 3 поколения изменился не только внешне, но и внутри. Несмотря на кажущуюся, на первый взгляд, для неопытного автолюбителя схожесть с старыми моделями, в салоне Subaru основной композицией стал большой 8 – дюймовый экран мультимедиа системы Starlink. Поменяли и стиль подачи информации сверху дисплея, он обрел новый порядок и новый вид схожей с чертежами инженеров. Панель приборов получила строгий, консервативный вид.

Передняя панель сделана из пластика, на дверях поменялась обивка. Внутри машины стало значительно тише, и тем самым комфортнее. Разработчики также дали шанс индивидуально выбрать материал салона, а также сделали комплектацию Премиум, куда вошла система экстренного торможения, круиз – контроль и еще несколько полезных функций.

Стал более защищенный водитель, он получил дополнительную подушку безопасности, а также новую более технологичную форму руля. Хороший бонус получили пассажиры сзади, им расширили пространство для ног. Вследствие этого изменились размеры машины и иже с ними схема открытия дверей. Садится и выходить стало гораздо удобнее, а большой 310 л. багажник позволит вам взять в дорогу все что влезет. А если сложить задние кресла, можно и позволить себе прилечь, пока внедорожник колесит по дорогам.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The new Crosstrek will undoubtedly be offered with Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance feature bundle, but whether or not that will be standard is unknown. The last-generation Crosstrek offered this as standard only on models equipped with the automatic transmission, while manual-transmission models did without the package. For more information about the Crosstrek’s crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

• Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
• Available adaptive cruise control

Driving the Subaru Crosstrek

Poke around and you’ll see that one of the biggest complaints about this car is that the Crosstrek is slow. With the 182-hp 2.5-liter engine, I can tell you the Crosstrek is not slow. It’s fine. I can’t speak to the base 2.0-liter engine and its 9.2-second 0-60 time, but not once in my week with the larger motor did it feel inadequately powered. True, on the highway, it’s loud and drones into the cabin, but that’s really the only part of the driving experience that might be considered unpleasant. The Crosstrek maintains highway speeds well and the seats are comfortable. They can be easily adjusted so that short people like me have no problem seeing over the car’s hood and around its wing mirrors. The rest of the visibility is excellent. The radio and climate controls are intuitively laid out. All in all, it was a great car to commute in, LA traffic included.

Like other current Subarus, the Crosstrek’s CVT is tuned to be eager off the line, which gives it a peppy feel when driving around town. The brakes are easy to modulate and don’t grab hard at the top of the pedal and the steering, though light, is fairly direct. And as much as the CVT catches a lot of hate, I think it’s unwarranted; the system operated quietly and with zero drama in the background, which is what you want. As a package, the car felt pretty chuckable despite its higher center of gravity. I felt confident enough to throw it around a bit on the Angeles Crest Highway, which was impressive. But what I appreciated most was that inside and out, the Crosstrek was a car I always felt I could just get into and drive. I didn’t need to fiddle with a thousand settings every time I started it, or pick my way gently through crowded and tight parking lots, or take any special approach lines to steep driveway ramps. Even in an urban setting, the casual go-anywhere confidence a Subaru inspires has its appeals.

All CVT-equipped Crosstreks come standard with Subaru’s EyeSight advanced driver-assist tech, updated this model year to have advanced adaptive cruise control with lane-centering. It made longer highway stints much more bearable, though I found some flaws in the system during stop-and-go traffic. In other cars I’ve tested, the adaptive cruise control stays on even if the car comes to a complete stop. In the Crosstrek, it shuts off completely and you have to manually restart it once you get moving again. But this is by no means a dealbreaker. Just something to be aware of.

Багажник у кроссовера – небольшой: его объем в обычном виде не превышает 400 литров. «Галерка» складывается в соотношении 60:40, увеличивая вместимость грузового отсека более чем втрое, однако плоского лежбища в таком случае не выходит. В нише под фальшполом – запаска и необходимый минимум инструментов.

Комплектации и цены

Даже на японском рынке продажи «третьего» Subaru Crosstrek начнутся только в 2023 году (комплектации и цены обещают объявить ближе к тому моменту), и лишь потом стартуют экспортные поставки.

Для автомобиля заявлен богатый набор опций: семь подушек безопасности, медиацентр с 11.6-дюймовым экраном, подогревы руля и всех сидений, полностью светодиодная оптика, легкосплавные колеса размерностью 16 или 17 дюймов, камеры кругового обзора, мониторинг слепых зон, двухзонный климат-контроль, электропривод пятой двери, качественная аудиосистема, адаптивный круиз-контроль и многое другое.

Subaru Crosstrek Features, Options, and Competition

What’s nice about the Crosstrek is that it comes with all-wheel drive as standard. Other subcompacts can’t say that—if they offer all-wheel drive at all. Standard features include active torque vectoring, roof rails, 17-inch alloy wheels, more rugged looks, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a 60/40-split fold-down back row. Base vehicle price comes to $23,570 when you include destination. The test car came fitted with the larger, eight-inch touchscreen, a power moon roof, and was priced starting at $29,145.

The Crosstrek can count the Hyundai Kona, Kia Seltos, Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, and Jeep Renegade among its competitors. While it is priced a bit higher than the competition and with the exception of the Renegade, it’s also the only one of the bunch that’s more rugged in its intent, has greater ground clearance, and offers all-wheel drive. And since I’m here, I’ll also mention that it has way more rear legroom than the CX-30. The Crosstrek isn’t your basic, front-wheel-drive subcompact; it’s one that you can tackle bad weather with and have some extra peace of mind. And it starts at a lower price than the Jeep.

Overview

It has never been a rock-crawling off-roader, but the Subaru Crosstrek has long been an affordable, rugged, and fuel-efficient package designed to go slightly farther off the pavement than an Impreza hatchback. That won’t change as the Crosstrek enters its next generation for the 2024 model year. Its styling has been tweaked, but in true Subaru fashion, it hasn’t been wildly altered. The same is true of its interior, which should remain as spacious and practical as the 2023 model. There’s a chance—albeit slight—that we may see more changes under the hood, but so far Subaru hasn’t announced those details for the U.S.-market Crosstrek. Notable enhancements have been made, however, as Subaru says its seats have been redesigned to be more comfortable and reduce head tossing. The EyeSight driver-assistance bundle also benefits from improved camera modules. We expect to see the 2024 Crosstrek debut soon in North American guise and go on sale sometime in 2023.

The Subaru Impreza was redesigned for the 2017 model year and the Subaru Crosstrek was redesigned for the 2018 model year. Two driver-side small overlap frontal tests of the Impreza were conducted, one by the Institute and the other by Subaru as part of . Ratings are based on both tests and apply to both the 4-door sedan and wagon versions of the Impreza as well as 2018 and later models of the Crosstrek wagon.

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid electric variant of the Crosstrek wagon, was introduced in the 2019 model year. Ratings also apply to the Crosstrek Hybrid.

The dummy’s position in relation to the door frame, steering wheel, and instrument panel after the crash test indicates that the driver’s survival space was maintained very well (Institute test car shown).

The frontal and side curtain airbags worked well together to keep the head from coming close to any stiff structure or outside objects that could cause injury (Institute test shown).

The driver’s space was maintained well in both tests, and risk of injuries to the dummy’s legs and feet was low.
